Yuji Inaka was a normal salaryman when he was hit by a truck and killed one day. His soul ended up in the wrong world, so the God there gave him a rare magic and reincarnated him as Alfred Slowlette, a second son of a Baron running a peaceful village. These are his daily exploits and experiences in a world of magic.
Names and Places (may include spoilers).
001: Death and...
It is said that there are gods residing in various places and items in Japan. Mountains, sea, land, water, fire, all sorts of things, apparently even a toilet? Gods exist in such everyday things.
Is there a place or item without a God? Are there more Gods inhabiting power figures than humans? Is that how Gods are omniscient? Furthermore, humans don’t know what God looks like. That includes me. Of course I have never seen a God. A thing that will exist that no one will ever see, an object of worship.
So what is a God?
Luckily or unluckily, I met one at the age of 27. In a pure white space with nothing around me, there seems to be a God.
002: Reincarnation
As I wake up, I get the feeling I’m surrounded by a fluffy something. I feel a bit worried that it seems I am being picked up by a giant silhouette of a person.
(Wow! What, what!)
“Wahhhhh! Wahh!” Yuji
I was trying to ask a question, but the sounds that come out of my mouth are the cries of a baby. I guess the giants surrounding me aren’t giants, but normal humans. Babies can’t see details, so that’s why they look like silhouettes instead of people. My hearing isn’t the best either.
003: Alfred Slowlette
The day after I experienced God’s magic lecture, I started trying to practice magic when I woke up in the morning.
But I can’t get the light to appear.
I feel something warm and powerful around my chest, but it doesn’t move like I want it to. When I tried to take hold of it (to be precise, inside myself), it would disappear like smoke.
Ugh, frustrating.
005: More Magic
That night, I pretended to go to sleep and waited for Elna to leave the room, then I opened the magic book in my bed. There aren’t any flashlights in this world, the residents use light from magic instead. Some use it directly, but there are also magic tools made for the purpose. On one of my adventures, I saw one of those tools in my Father’s office.
For future reference, a magic tool consists of a magic circle that defines the result and a magic stone that powers the magic circle. Apparently, magic stones are found inside defeated monsters, or by mining in magic rich areas. Keep in mind that the magic rich areas are also inhabited by strong monsters, so mining for magic stones must be a difficult endeavor. I’m not planning on doing any of that.
006: Spatial Magic & Beetles
“It’s great to be able to move around on your own feet.” Al
After finishing my mid-morning meal, I wander around the mansion with light footfalls. A normal day has two meals, one at mid-morning and one in the evening. Growing children like Eleanora and I don’t get quite enough food with just two meals a day, so we grab some bread or leftovers most days. Eleanora is quite active, so she burns through the calories.
007: A Tired 3-year-old
“Transference!” Al
Thud, thud thud!
From the next room there is the sound of three wooden plates dropping to the ground. I wonder if my transferred dishes fell straight to the ground, or hit something on the way down. Probably, just the former.
“Hmm, this might be tricky.” Al
Two months later, I’ve continued experiments on Transfer Magic and have a better idea of how it works.
008: Mercy, Bartolo
“Sei! Ha!” Eleanora
“Hey! Ha!” Silvio
Eleanora and Silvio are crossing swords in the courtyard. Eleanora’s shouts and the wooden sword impacts sound good. It’s fun to watch her ponytail shift back and forth vigorously.
009: Peacefulness
“It’s a nice day today” Al
Alfred, that is, me, is enjoying a nap in the mansion’s garden. The grass here is reminiscent of a lawn and feels great. While it’s summer, the temperature doesn’t feel too hot since there’s a nice wind and the humidity isn’t suffocating. Japan was just weird. In the cities you would experience the heat island that caused the temperature to rise so much. It seems it was due to the buildings and asphalt everywhere and not enough green areas and water covered areas. To that point, Koriat village has nothing like that. The countryside is so nice.
010: Four Years Old
After the hot Summer and cold Winter, we have arrived at a new Spring. By the way, Spring means my birthday has come as it’s on April 7th. Yes, I’m now four! As children grow up, they are given new freedoms.
011: The Village Square
Once my dad left with the mayor, I started walking around to see what on sale in the square. This is a fantasy world, there should be something delicious or interesting. I’d be great to find some rice. I wonder what that colorful mushroom is for?
After I’m done browsing, I’d like to visit the village cafe and eat some ordinary food. What are ordinary people eating in this world? I know there’s eggs, but what about omelets? What about Tamagoyaki? If it’s not a known recipe, I’d need to get one of the special frying pans to make them. I guess that’d be more work for Bartolo.
I’ll start off by buying some vegetables from a young man nearby.
012: Reversi
Today, I’m planning on making a Reversi set using the paint and wood boards I picked up on my trip to the village with Nord.
Reversi, a game that can be learnt in a minute, and takes a lifetime to master. The rules are simple but the strategies are complex.
I start by marking out an 8x8 grid of squares on the board, then I just have to cut that board to size and make the pieces. This is so easy to make, whoever came up with this must have been a genius.
Pretty soon, I was finishing off the Reversi set by painting the discs.
013: Frying pan and Tamagoyaki
I pass back through the village square, it’s busy as ever today. Looking for the older woman from the restaurant… lovely ladies are all over the square on a day that I can’t enjoy them.
“Oh, yeah! So I’ve made spaghetti twice now.” Lady A
“Me too” Lady B
“My husband wants to eat it as much as I do? Is that reasonable?” Lady C
“Wow, my husband Mario often eats it too.” Lady A
“Thanks for that bread! It’s unbelievable!” Lady B
014: Once Again...
So, there’s been some fallout from the introduction of Reversi and tamagoyaki.
Reversi was introduced into an environment where men and women of all ages can get into a competition at a similar skill level. Of course, one or two Reversi boards can’t handle the interest, so the village carpenter, Herman, was tapped to produce Reversi boards as fast as he could. At any given time, there’s a few villagers waiting outside his workplace for a chance to pick up a board. I only had to visit his house once, to explain how to make the board and pieces.
015: Six Years Old
“Huh” Al
“Mmmhh…” Eleanora
“…” Silvio
Since I’m six-years-old now, I’ve started my education. At the moment, that’s etiquette, arithmetic, and some history. Most children start with learning to read, but I had been reading for a few years, so I got to skip ahead.
Next to me, my sister Eleanora is attempting her arithmetic work, it’s not going well for her. Her sword talent is prodigious, to the point that our father Nord thinks she could easily join the country’s military as a Knight. Around here, the only one who she can’t consistently defeat is Nord. She’s growing more and more powerful.
016: Intruder in my Secret Base
Today, I’m practicing with a wooden sword in the courtyard. This instance, it’s not regular practice or a punishment, but a voluntary act. It’s part of a strategy of mine, I want to get better to not lose so hilariously.
Move silently and use the power of the whole body, not just the wrist and elbows. After a hundred swings, I got tired of sword swings. Maybe I’ll try some Kendo-style swings instead.
017: Dragon Slayer
Make water with water magic, then heat it up with fire magic, then make Rumba get into the hot water to clean a muddy Rumba.
“This is a better bath than some of the luxury inns in the capital I’ve stayed in. You’ve even got soap that doesn’t smell bad. This actually smells good!” Rumba
Obviously, you shouldn’t underestimate a Japanese person who wants to be hospitable. While the bath may be on the smaller side, the amenities are hard to beat in this world. While he’s enjoying the bath, I’ll make some food to eat, I figure he’ll eat a bunch, so I’ll grab some ingredients from my subspace.
018: Those who are disciplined
Next morning, after Rumba stayed the night at the mansion. We skipped academic lessons and went straight to sword practice. It looks like Eleanora and Rumba will be practicing together, I wonder who I’ll be practicing with?
“Al, let’s do a father and son practice today.” Nord
It feels like there’s a slight maliciousness to my Dad’s smile this morning. We’re just practicing with wooden swords, right?
019: growth
“Heyo! Let’s go get a snack.” Eleanora
Eleanora busts into my room without knocking like usual.
“Eh? Let’s get Bartolo to make something.” Al
“No, I think we should go pick some fruit.” Eleanora
What a diva!
“Then, do you mean the fruit from the trees behind the mansion?” Al
“No, from the forest where you’ve been building huts and stone houses.” Eleanora
020: Silvio
“Well, I think it’s nap time!” Al
Today is a great day for a nap. If you opened the wooden window, you would be able to enjoy the beautiful weather.
While humming, I climb the stairs and open the door to my room.
“Zzz… Zzz…” Eleanora
A force of nature between me and my bed, I won’t be able to nap in it.
“Why is Eleanora sleeping in my bed? What is she doing here?” Al
021: Rumba and the Forest
I think it’s been about a week since Rumba came to visit Koriat Village? I didn’t think he’d want to stay in the Lord’s mansion the whole time, so I offered my secret base house for him to stay at. That being said, it should be a more luxurious accommodation that your average village inn.
That being said, there were some restrictions. I’m not going to be cooking for Rumba every day, so he’ll have to go the Celia’s restaurant or cook for himself. Rumba can earn money by hunting in the mountains, though it seems he also has a reasonable amount of money on him too.
022: Shield ramifications, heartfelt words
“Silvio? Hellooo?” Al
I cheerfully knock on Silvio’s room.
“…” Silvio
However, Silvio didn’t reply as if he wasn’t there. However, I had just seen him enter with books and snacks. He’s graceful like a real aristocrat. Hmm, if I listen carefully, I can hear the sounds of him turning the pages of a book. It’s proof that Silvio is hiding in his room.
023: Hamburger and Mina
Lights sounds echo through the mansion’s kitchen as Bartolo chops some fresh onions in a practiced manner. Then he throws the chopped onions into a frying pan to stir-fry them. I mix up meat in a 7:3 ration between beef and pork using a knife in each hands while he’s doing that.
024: Super Spicy
Koriat Village is preparing for the wheat harvest, which fed an excited atmosphere. The way the wheat changes from green to gold increases people’s anticipation, Summer has come to an end this year. Wheat seeds will be sown in October, and the harvest will be August to September. This world has four distinct seasons and the climate is close to that of central Japan. Spring is welcomed with flowers of all colors, Summer raises the temperature, Autumn cools down and turns the leaves red, and Winter often brings snow. As the seasons change, we can tell that time has passed.
025: Let's go on a Picnic
After the usual sword practice today, I’m washing my face with water from the well. The cold water feels good as it washes away the sweat, at least in the summer, in the winter it becomes a hellish practice. After I washed off my face, I realized I forgot to grab a cloth to dry off. I shake my head from side to side, but that doesn’t help that much.
026: A Gentle Sister
I’ve left Logan’s hut and I’m heading back in the direction of the village. I don’t have to walk, since I could use Spatial Magic to transfer, but it’s a beautiful day so I’ll walk to a picnic spot. It’s a bit lonely to go by myself, I wonder if I should go back and talk Logan into it. I don’t actually have an acquaintances or friends of the same age at the moment, it’d be nice to change that fact. Perhaps I can change that if I visit the village more. I could go and ask Silvio, he’d probably like to read a book in a scenic place.
027: Cool Summer
The mountain path we’re on starts with a gentle slope, but it turns steeper. Plenty of villagers come this way to gather edible plants, so we’re using the trail that’s been made. We’re in a lush forest environment only seen in summer. Even though it’s hot outside, the breeze and the forest shade is making it cool for us. This isn’t like Japan, I don’t even need to use Ice Magic to cool off.
028: Demons and Bathtubs
The wheat harvest is in progress and the villagers are super busy. They’re all harvesting wheat and other crops with the whole family. Some of the harvest will be paid as taxes, but the villagers are happy with their village and the harvest is looking good, so no one has to worry about paying taxes in this village. Even if this year didn’t have a good harvest, we have enough in storage to handle it. In that case, we would distribute the stored crops to both feed and re-plant. Most everybody is busy harvesting, but in five days, we’ll hold a harvest festival.
029: Harvest Festival
As the villagers have finished harvesting nearly all the crops, it’s time for a harvest festival. An annual harvest festival is seen as fun for the village after a hard time of work. During the festival, most people don’t work, instead the eat, drink, and dance to celebrate a good year’s harvest. When it’s a bad year, the festival is reduced for that year, that a rare occurrence for this village.
This year is an especially rich harvest, and on top of that the Slowlette family is making extra profit from Reversi royalties. Apparently some nobles that Nord is friendly with will come to visit, I heard it’s Count Melna and Viscount Yulina. Currently, the hospitality employees of the Slowlette family are busy making and serving food.
030: Fruit Juice Toast
I won my brackets in the Reversi tournament and managed to make it to the finals. I had assumed that my opponent would be Carla, the daughter of Celia, just like the previous tournament, but Yulina had defeated Carla in the second-to-last round and went to the final.
Based on what I saw of his match with Carla, he seemed to be the kind of player who tries to think 2 or 3 moves ahead of the other player and is averse to making risky moves. He might not be as skilled as Silvio, but he’s going to be a difficult opponent. I’m happy to say that Silvio can defeat me consistently in Shogi and Reversi, but I’m a little disappointed at the same time.
031: Escape Artist
“Everyone, I’m going to do a magic trick!” Al
“Oh! Alfred is up to something!” Villager A
“Will this be interesting?” Villager B
“Good! Let’s see it!” Villager C
My declaration has riled up the villagers. Many already are a bit red in the face from celebrations, a great time for an interesting trick. Celia and Carla come out from the kitchen to see what the noise is about.
Isn’t it fine to have a little excitement? It’s the harvest festival, everyone is having fun and making noise. Let’s release some stress we’ve been accumulating.
032: An Angel's Smile
After leaving Celia’s restaurant with Count Melna and Viscount Yulina, I returned to the Slowlette family’s mansion. Seems there’s an unfamiliar carriage out front. There weren’t any horses or coachmen around it, perhaps it belongs to Melna or Yulina?
Based on the wood type and decorations, this isn’t an average person’s carriage. This is an expensive carriage for carrying passengers comfortably, very unlike one of Triela’s carriages. In addition, there’s a heraldry icon on the side of the carriage.
033: A Pure Mind
The Slowlette family was having dinner with our guests Count Melna and Viscount Yulina and Lynaria. Bartolo’s food and specialty spaghetti were well received by our guests, one might think Melna would be full after all he ate at Celia’s restaurant, but he was eating plenty at dinner.
After dinner, the adults went to the drawing room to chat and relax. I’m walking back to my room, when I notice someone following me.
034: Two Rests
“Hmm…” Al
I awake to a cool winter temperature and a dazzling sunrise. Perhaps it is too early for me to get out of the futon. Of course, maids like Sarah and cooks like Bartolo would already be awake to prepare breakfast and handle early morning chores. Unlike the modern world I came from, this world is still in the rhythm of going to futon and waking up with the sun’s schedule.
I have the option of staying up late by utilizing Light magic, but I’m only a six-year-old child. Children of my age are forced by their body to get plenty of sleep every day. Before I go to sleep, I practice magic until I exhaust my magic energy, which causes me to want to go to sleep.
035: A Demon King, A Hero, and a Lost Shield
Before this morning’s sword practice, I need to eat some breakfast. Breakfast is an important meal of the day, back in Japan I often heard “You can skip at night, but don’t skip in the morning!”
If breakfast is skipped continuously, it can affect future health. I will focus on building a healthy body for a peaceful life.
When I entered the dining room, my mother Elna was gracefully sipping tea at the table.
“Good morning Mom” Al
“Oh, Al. Good morning… it looks nice out today.” Elna
036: Final Day of Harvest Festival
On the middle day of the harvest festival, I didn’t venture down to the village. You can imagine the reason, truthfully, I lost the battle against the Demon King. My body and soul were tattered from the damage.
I had a good session with Count Melna. He watched my matches that morning, pointed out what I was doing wrong, taught me the right way, then practiced with me to make sure I internalized the lesson.
It was a good practice, but then I was assigned to practice against Rumba. I felt worried for my life even though we were just practicing with wooden swords.
037: Fujoshi Convention
“That’s funny… I’ve lost Silvio” Al
I was standing alone on a busy road lined with food stalls. While eating the salted beans I picked up, I looked around again. Even though it had passed noon, the liveliness of the village has only picked up. Parents and children are happily chatting alongside the stall owners announcing their products. It’s becoming more crowded as the night approaches.
“Is Silvio lost?” Al
038: A Big Man
“Thor, uhh… are you seriously interested?” Al
It took me a few seconds to realise that Thor looked to be interested in the romance life of Eleanora.
“Oh, I’m serious” Thor
Thor stares right into my eyes, unblinkingly. Stop for a moment, you’re too close. It would be dangerous to be seen by the strange women in this position. It looks as if Thor is interested in me when he’s just using me to know more about who he is interested in…
039: Al's Elegant Moment
It’s been a week since the harvest festival. The noisiness of the festival has disappeared and the village has returned to tranquility. The day after the festival, there were a lot of people who had hangovers or were still tired.
The last night, children under the age of twelve were sent home before the festivities ended. I ended up going home with Eleanora. In the end, Silvio spent the rest of that day in his room. What happened while he was lost? I could guess, but I don’t want to think about it.
040: The Infinite Sky
“What should I do?” Al
I’m standing petrified in the hallway. It’s the real Eleanora lying down unconscious in the hallway, this is reality, not a nightmare. What do I do? Do I bury her body? Do I leave her to be found by someone else?
Is she still alive?
Ok, first task is to ascertain life signs. I place my hand on the wrist and look for a pulse. Last I heard, use the index and middle finger, not the thumb.
041: Making Hot Water
“Bro, I want to wash my face, make me some hot water.” Eleanora
While I was relaxing on the living room sofa, Eleanora came up to me. She sticks an empty tub out for me to put the hot water in.
“What’s your magic attribute Eleanora?” Al
“Fire” Eleanora
She swishes her hair with one hand, as if my question didn’t matter. When I didn’t get to making the water, Eleanora cocks her head to the side.
042: Slippers
After a delicious lunch, Elna, Eleanora, and I were relaxing in the living room. Eleanora and I were sitting across from each other; she keeps glancing down at my feet.
“Hey, what do you have on your feet Al? They’re not shoes, right?” Eleanora
“No, they’re slippers” Al
“Slippers?” Eleanora
043: Chased by Fear
Today, I’m running down the corridor with all my energy. I run down the stairs skipping every other stair, I feel like I’ve run through all of the first and second floor, and even the garden outside. How many times have I seen the same scenery fly by?
I can hear the footsteps of my pursuer. From my point of view, they’re playing a melody of death. They’re coming to reap my life, and I’m running away. I can’t escape from that person’s amazing physical ability.
Why are you running? Because I’m running away.
What are you running away from? It’s from the pursuer.
“Wait!” Eleanora
044: I was just curious
The vision of my room blurs for a second, then my view changes drastically.
“Good luck… oops, I knocked over a cabbage.” Al
The person in front of me sits down and puts a box on the ground.
“Oi, kid, where did you appear from?!” Bartolo
Bartolo stands up while holding the cabbage. Even when surprised, he still preserves the ingredients, as expected of a professional chef.
045: Bartolo is from a Snowy Country
Winter, the season with the shortest days of the year. It seems that occurs the same in this world.
Would be around Christmas day in my original world? Christmas, the day for lovers.
Christmas Eve on the 24th and Christmas is on the 25th. I eat cake on both days, but there is a difference there.
In the first place, Christmas as a concept comes from the Christian religion. However, for the Japanese people, it’s become a day where it’s dominated by corporate imagined events instead of a religious holiday. Instead of focusing on the original celebration of the birth of the religious founder, it was a day where couples would flirt with each other. How did that day turn into a romantic day?
046: Snow and Snowballs
“Snow and fox, fox, fox, fall and fall” Al
What’s the next line? I wonder if I got the first line of the song right in the first place. At the end, the cat would have been rhymed with a kotatsu…
“Al sometimes sings strange songs.” Thor
As we walk down the snowy road, Thor looks back. I wonder if I’m tone deaf, I’d butcher the song if so.
“What? Right?” Asmo
“Somehow, the melody is uselessly good and is catchy. It was a melody I had never heard here.” Thor
047: Three Ice Sculptures
We didn’t want to get mixed up with the violent adult snowball fights, so after a small snowball among the three of us, we grouped up at the back of the village square.
“Looking good… Hey, Asmo! Help me roll this!” Thor
“So you got a bit greedy and made it too big. I can’t help you.” Asmo
We’re currently making snowmen. When you think of snow, you can’t forget about
snowmen. Thor and Asmo are putting together a snowman while I roll up
sections for mine. Why didn’t they say anything while I was making it too big?
048: Snowball Fight: Sister vs. Younger Brother 1
“Well, I’m cold. I’ll definitely catch a cold.” Thor
“What are you saying? Thor isn’t fast enough to catch a cold.” Asmo
“I agree” Al
Thor is walking down the road, shivering.
Asmo and I were walking behind him, retorting to him.
“Well, if I don’t, it’s because Al made an instant bath to warm me up.” Thor
Thor didn’t catch our joke. Asmo and I were joking that his brain was slow so he couldn’t catch a cold, but then he missed the pun. It’ll be funnier if we keep quiet.
049: Snowball Fight: Sister vs. Younger Brother 2
“Listen! If you just follow Alfred’s steps, you won’t fall in! Be prepared!” Eleanora
Eleanora has crawled out of her second pitfall, and is following the path of my footsteps. Isn’t it strange that she’s keeping her magic power on her hands and legs active?
Even if we’re using magic in a snowball fight, it’s really about throwing snowballs at each other, right? I’m throwing snowballs at Eleanora since she’s coming in a straight line at me, but she’s smashing them with her fists.
050: A Snow Day from Village Resident Perspectives
An unnamed house in Koriat Village
A husband and child put on thick leather boots and stand up.
“We’re going out” Husband
“See you later, mom!” Child
“Yes, enjoy yourselves. I’ll be going over to Lena’s house after I’m done with this item I’m knitting, so serve yourselves some stew for lunch.” Mother
“Yes!” Child
I watched the energetic child leave while I waved goodbye. My husband follows the child out the door. The door closes behind them.
051: Invitation to the Party
The fallen snow is starting to melt, and the days seem a bit less cold recently. My mother, Elna, said “It’s getting warmer” yesterday, but I’m cold-natured and can’t necessarily agree. Silvio might have similar thoughts, as he spends most of the day with me in my room, that I keep warm with magic. He’s a considerate visitor, spending the day reading books or studying. My sister isn’t as considerate, she’ll barge in when she isn’t practicing the sword.
The other warm room is the living room, since it has a big fireplace. Normally, I’m the one that entertains Eleanora, and it’s extremely annoying since I can’t make new sweets or try certain magic. Recently, she’s been trying to drag me along to her sword training. I feel like she’s been training more since that snowball fight, am I in danger?
052: On the Way
The trees are starting to grow leaves, and the garden looks to bloom soon based on the amount of buds. I can also hear a bird singing, so spring will be soon to arrive. The temperature has been rising for a while, it’ll be a while before it becomes hot, and it’s hard to call it cold either. In the mansion garden, home of the hesitant greenery, luggage is being loaded hurriedly into the carriage. Yes, for the royal capital journey.
There’s still several days before the party will be held, but Koriat Village in deep in the countryside. It’s far away from the royal capital, a good week’s journey by carriage. Does it really take that long?
053: Blooming!
“Hmm… is it finally over?” Gates
“Well, perk up after wrapping up an encounter like this. This is the last one.” Rumba
Rumba look over at Gates, who is currently lying on his back. Gates sees my concerns and laughs it off.
“It was a strong blow…” Gates
“Really?” Al
After the first goblin emerged, more came along, even some higher rank goblins appeared. I was watching how our escorting adventurers were dealing with the flock of ten goblins, but Gates entire plan looked to be calling for help. Fortunately, the carriage with Rumba and Nord was nearby, so those two ran over and started attacking the goblins. The goblins were defeated by the those two, but Gates fared differently, he was knocked down by a high goblin early in the battle.
054: Royal Guards
The royal capital is surrounded by a huge wall to protect the city inhabitants. It seems the wall has never been pierced since its construction, and has protected the city from invasion on multiple occasions. The guards who live as citizens of the capital have a proud look as they scrutinize the incoming people.
Although the Slowlette family a minor baron, we’re still aristocrats, so we’re able to use the smaller priority line instead of the long commoner line. We still have to go past the envious stares of merchants and travelers.
055: Royal Capital Main Street
“We’re here! The royal capital!” Al
A bunch of people are coming and going as we passed through the castle gate. There are adventurers returning after completing a request. Workers are taking a break off to the side of the street. Also, people who are packing luggage into their carriage before setting off. I can see streets bustling with traffic and stall lining both sides.
The main street is paved with stones and large stone buildings are lined up on either side. In the distance, I can see that a magnificent castle towers over the city. Is that the royal castle? It looks big from this distance, but would it still look so good if I got closer?
“Wow! It’s so big! It’s so pretty! It’s pretty!” Mina
056: With Ra-chan
I’m aware that -chan is an honorific, I’m leaving it in here because I like the way it reads.
“I’m four years old!” says Ra-chan cheerfully then “Ehehe” to top it off.
When you look closely, you can see she has an innocent but well-proportioned face. She’s bound to turn heads when she grows up.
“I’m Alfred, I’ll be seven years old soon” Al
“Al? Al is friend?” Ra-chan
“What are you talking about?” Al
“Al!” Ra-chan
“I’m right here!” Al
057: Magic Tool Store
On the first day of my visit to the royal capital, I ran into a lost child called Ra-chan and spent half the day visiting food stalls with her. How far did I walk that day? I started to want to use Transfer magic halfway through.
I wonder if I could make some roller skates? Main problem being that the roads are paved, but they’re paved with cobblestones, so normal wheels would get caught. Back in Koriat Village, there’s too much grass and loose soil, so roller skates don’t make sense there. Maybe I could make jumbo wheels? It was one of the things I was thinking about while wandering around.
058: Tops and Grandchildren
In a room in the inn that was isolated from the hustle and bustle of the royal capital, the Slowlette family is relaxing after eating breakfast. The only sounds are my mother and father chatting with each other.
At the moment, I’m relaxing on a fine sofa nearby, thinking about what to do today. I’m thinking about possibly making something with the rotating magic tool I purchased yesterday. In a similar vein, a top wouldn’t require any magic tool knowledge. They’re just some string and wood. Maybe in the future I could build a fancy top that uses an internal rotating magic tool?
059: Aristocratic Exchange Meeting
I dislike having to go to the aristocratic party on my birthday. This should be a day I can celebrate turning seven years old. I have to delay my birthday celebration because of the party. Well, it’s only a few days, my birthday didn’t get cancelled. Today is the first day of the aristocratic get-together hosted by Duke Leingeland.
060: Horseplay in the Venue
“Maid, can I get some wine…” Al
“Um, it’s not allowed. Wine is only for adults.” Maid
I want to have a drink, but that’s not allowed. I’m still only a child.
“So… I’m supposed to eat the hors d’oeuvres with fruit juice?” Al
I’ve just finished greeting other aristocrats along with my father. There were so many people with long names, I almost forgot some of them. It’s unrealistic to expect a kid to properly greet and remember so many people all at once. Thanks to Nord hinting at them during conversation, I’ve made it through the receiving line. Now that Nord is free, the noble daughters and sons are surrounding him.
061: That Child Again
Eric and I were removed from the main venue by our parents. I was scolded by my father and mother while Eric was thumped by his grumpy father. I was only doing it since Eric ridiculed the Slowlette territory! Of course, Koriat Village in the Slowlette territory is an amazing place, so I should retaliate, right?
062: Al's Calamity
“Aha, it’s Al” Ra-chan
Ra-chan hugged me wearing her innocent smile, but Eric is scared away by her? That makes me worried, now I’m bothered about this new danger. I was pretty sure that Ra-chan was an aristocrat before. With her well-tailored clothes and an older sister that picked her up in a carriage, it was either nobility or a major merchant family. She’s now wearing a light blue fluffy dress, her skirt and twin-tails sway around in a cute manner.
“Al was also an aristocrat.” Ra-chan
063: No Misunderstanding
With the ridiculous statement that Ra-chan just said, I did a complete spit take. She smiles next to me while Shelka and Eric have their mouths hanging open while I try to catch my breath. When did I kiss Ra-chan?
Ra-chan and I are pretty far apart in mental age, even if our ages aren’t that far apart physically. I think it’s unpleasant for a seven-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl to kiss. Additionally, the other party is part of a duke’s family, that’s not going to accepted by society.
When did she think we kissed? I have no idea.
064: Fun Moments Go By Quickly
After that particular event, but not caused by that event, the aristocratic exchange party was greeted by the event’s sponsor, the Duke of Leingeland. He’s a man with a fiery red hair that’s pulled back, but he has a calm atmosphere that conflicts with his hair.
I can that his eyes aren’t peaceful, they’ve got a glare like a hunting beast. I’ll put this guy in the list of people to avoid getting involved with. When I first saw it, I thought he was a predator.
065: Second Night of Aristocratic Exchange Party
The venue has more and fancier decorations than yesterday, and many aristocrats are already in the venue.
A maid pours drinks for aristocrats with polite movements, then moves to the next person. She’s making it quick, but not so fast that it would be rude. She gives a nod when she’s run out of liquid in her pitcher, then withdraws. Luxurious dishes are brought out one after another, they have fragrant smells that tickle the nostrils of anyone nearby. It complements the chatter of the conversations, and I can hear laughter and cheers rising from here and there. I’d definitely like to enjoy some wine tonight.
066: A Red-haired Duke's Daughter
“I heard about Mr. Nord’s story! You chopped through the dragon’s neck in one swing!” Fan
“I heard that the total length of the dragon could wrap around the whole royal castle, is that true?” Fan
“It was possible because of everyone’s teamwork. And I don’t remember it being quite as big as the royal castle.” Nord
Nord is still surrounded by his admirers, daughters and boys aiming to be knights. Nord defeated the dragon before Eleanora or I were born. The children around him must have grown up listening to the story of the dragon slayer rather than witnessing it. It seems Nord has a large amount of enthusiastic fans.
067: Second Princess Cordelia
After I politely declined the engagement rumours that Alicia threw at me, I wonder if she was convinced. She had on a unfathomable smile after all. But I think I can breathe for the moment.
At this point, the musicians playing in the venue stop playing. A single stringed instrument plays a short melody as a person shouts.
“Behold the entry of Princess Cordelia” Announcer
068: Let's go around the royal capital
I calm down and listen to Bran’s story. Bran was attending a party that Eleanora was at, he then fell in love with Eleanora at first sight and sought an engagement. Eleanora immediately refused without a second thought. Bran didn’t want to give up, so he repeatedly proposed throughout the party. Eventually, Eleanora was impressed by his enthusiasm, and gave him a challenge.
“If you can defeat me with a sword, I’ll consent to the engagement.” Eleanora
069: Lazy Couple
Eventually, the lover’s quarrel came to an end as the man managed to stand up and talk to his girlfriend. She’s bowing her head it’s as if they’re flirting. In the end, they walk off with the guy pulling on her hand. He showed his manliness at the end, I guess. I watch them walking around holding hands, they move to a cafe where they have a conversation over cups of tea.
I’m sure they’ve made up and are content with each other.
070: Al & Eric
The mansion of the Duke of Leingeland
In the shade of the garden, Alicia sits while making comments like ‘At least the weather is nice’. Alicia squints her eyes as a breeze blows her lustrous red hair and dress.
“You should be able to watch the duel safely here.” Maid
The maid waiting beside Alicia started preparing tea. Perhaps interesting things will happen today, Alicia thinks to herself. Alicia observes Bran standing in the middle of the garden while thinking various things.
071: Everyday in the Shopping District
“Welcome, welcome! Prices are super low today! I recommend this plump radish! How about you, beautiful madam! This radish is as beautiful as your lovely thighs, right?” Vegetable Seller
Daring voices are heard from the shopping area on the south boulevard. It sounds like the muscled vegetable seller I had previously seen was trying to attract a female shopper. Why is he using ‘plump’ as a descriptor for a radish? He didn’t put a sock on one today, but instead he’s trying to compare them to thighs.
“Well, it does look beautiful… Hey, are you insulting me? My thighs are thinner and supple. Are you saying my thighs are fat like a radish?” Woman
072: Breath of the Wind
After that event, Eric and I browsed through the shopping streets, looking in weapon stores and armor stores. We then returned to the main boulevard to find a place to rest a while. Interestingly, this was the area where I ran into Ra-chan a few days ago.
“Oh, I’d like a short break.” Al
I’m not sure that Eric is guiding me so much as we’re wandering around together, but it gets tiring to walk so far around the crowded royal capital. I want to walk all around so that when I travel back using Transfer magic, I can appear close to where I want to visit. I’m keeping my eyes out for discreet places. I look down dark back roads and where the guards are standing. I’ll need to understand the lay of the land properly before I can come next time.
073: Royal Capital Escape Drama
The skirt, lifted by Ra-chan’s Wind Magic, dances gracefully and exposes a certain item to the people on the street. The actual time was short, but I felt like time slowed down.
“Oh!” Shelka
Shelka reflexively protected her face, then yelped and pushed her skirt back down. The south boulevard of the capital is always busy and loud, but at this point it was silent. Shelka quickly turn as red as a tomato as she realized her skirt had shown off what it’s supposed to hide to a lot of people.
She lets go of her skirt’s hem and looks down. I can’t see her expression since her bangs are blocking my view, I’d think she’s extremely embarrassed. Ra-chan is looking on in interest.
074: Rotten Den
Eric and I run down the roads of the royal capital, closely followed by Shelka with Fire Magic ready around her.
“Hey, Eric. Is there a backstreet that we could lose her on?” Al
We haven’t been able to lose her yet, so I prod Eric. I feel like we’ve run far enough that it might have happened.
“Huh? We’re on the main street. There’s not any such streets off of this road.” Eric
“Then let’s get onto a road like that, I thought you knew the capital?” Al
075: Encounter in the Sky
“Ah, I really did it. What do I do now?” Shelka
Shelka is frozen and is muttering things as she watch Bran keel over like a dead frog. She was all fired up trying to punish us from her shame, but she is catatonic after knocking out the unrelated party of Bran. Bran is a complete disappointment, but he’s the eldest son of a Count family. He just got stunned by a Duke’s daughter, Shelka knocked him out with Wind Magic!
Is he unsuited for the real world?
So did I win the duel?
076: Dragon Slayer Play Part 1
“Hey, we’re down now” Al
I tell Eric, who has tightly closed his eyes and is shaking in fear.
“For real? That was faster than I expected, are you serious?” Eric
“Not joking” Al
We are currently located on the roof of a building near the theatres in the northwest area of the royal capital. I got us down with Transfer magic instead of Shield magic. I was planning to use Shield magic, but Eric was shaking so badly I was worried he’d fall off. I got desperate when I was escaping from the rotten women, so I didn’t pay attention when I was running away.
077: Dragon Slayer Play Part 2
Note: The actor playing Nord is listed as Norf (faux Nord), the actress playing Elna will be listed as Elna.
Huh? Is that Elna, my mother? I lean out of my seat and stare wide-eyed at the actress on stage.
“Are you surprised since the actress has a large chest?” Eric
“That is a discontinuity, but there’s more to it than that!” Al
I pulled the Eric’s cheek a bit, then went back to looking at the play. I heard some of a protest from beside me, but I ignored it.
078: Shopping
“Al, we’re leaving the royal capital tomorrow, ok?” Nord
“Really? So we’re going straight back to Koriat Village, right?” Al
While eating breakfast at the inn, a comment from my father woke me from my stupor. Yesterday, I watched the Dragon Slayer play and located various prime locations to use Transfer magic so I could return to the royal capital.
The royal capital has an incredible variety of items, foods, and shops. At the same time, it was draining and I wanted to go back to peaceful Koriat Village. I’m still just a visitor here, this isn’t my home.
“Oh, that’s right” Elna
“Yes, finally” Nord
079: Souvenirs
My father has been drained by clothes shopping for an uncommonly long time, but he puts on a brave face for his beloved wife. I can hear female customers commenting on my parent’s close relationship, I’m sorry other husbands and boyfriends. They’re a very nice couple from any perspective.
Since I’m a kid, I didn’t expect to find many things, but I came across a few small items. I should be able to find a good souvenir for Emma, so it wasn’t completely terrible to be dragged into this store. There are many barrettes, hair elastics, scrunchies, bracelets, and other colorful accessories. This store has a sizable female section, if I wasn’t an innocent child, I might have been shy.
Names and Places
I Want to Live a Slow Life in the Countryside After Reincarnation is a story about an overworked Japanese salaryman who is reincarnated into a world of magic and monsters, but still finds a way to have a slow peaceful life?
080: Returning to Koriat Village
After that, we left the magic tool shop and kept shopping. We bought some things from another fancy clothing store, a cloth shop, and some tea leaves from a tea shop. After buying bulk sugar and tea leaves, Elna went into another clothing store with Nord. What do they need from this clothing store?
Children my age and rank don’t need high-end clothes, so I’m taking a break on a bench outside the store. I wasn’t interested in looking at more clothes. I’m letting Nord and Elna enjoy some time to themselves. I’d like a drink, but I can’t see any food stall around.
081: Souvenirs for Thor
I’m getting up!
I wake up when I hear the voice of Eleanora shouting at me. I raise up my upper body, stretch, then get up and push the shutters open. I spot Eleanora shaking her auburn ponytail below me. She’s wearing the polka-dotted scrunchie I gave her yesterday.
I was worried she would say ‘I don’t need such a thing’, but she seemed to like it quite a bit. She picked a few from the selection I brought back, I guess the rest were the ones that didn’t suit her. I thought it would be difficult to tell if the accessories would be well-received, even if some of the guys I asked thought it would be fine.
082: Royal Choice Tea
“Yeah! Al! Let’s have a practice bout!” Thor
“You worry me” Al
Thor said that right after getting a goblin sword. Yesterday, I spent a good bit of time practicing with Eleanora, why would I want to do it again the next day?
I just got back from a long trip to the royal capital, can’t I have a few slow days? I was disappointed that my first hours spent back at the mansion were spent in sword practice with Eleanora.
“It’s fine, just a short one! Not long at all! Come on! It’ll be fine!” Thor
083: Swing
I went to my secret base house for the first time in a long while today. It was nice to spend time in the mansion, but the weather was so nice today I had to spend time outside.
I climbed a tree nearby to check the thickness and toughness of a large branch. I’m not worried the branch breaking under my weight, I bet Asmo could walk along it without it breaking. Well, maybe I’m not so sure. He did break the ice last winter, and it should have been frozen to a reasonable depth. Well, Asmo isn’t going to be here, so we’ll be fine.
084: Origami
Eleanora entered my room as usual, not knocking.
“Al, what are you doing?” Eleanora
She looked at me with her hand on the doorknob, I was sitting on the floor with some paper. For her, the mansion is just an extension of her room, she doesn’t need to knock. Even if I complain about not knocking, I’ll just get a noncommittal reply.
“I’m folding paper, I call it origami.” Al
085: Pyonkichi and lunch
“Done!” Al
A cute rabbit made from an apple slice is completed in the mansion’s kitchen. The bright red skin of the skin complements the pale yellow color of the flesh. The arch of the apple skin was reminiscent of a real rabbit. The craftsmanship amazes with two ears made out of the skin and two eyes made out of apple seeds. This isn’t a snack, but a work of art. I’m not sure whether it’s due to my skill or the quality of the apple, but it’s great. It feels like a waste, but if it sits out, the flesh turns brown.
086: Current Character Info
Alfred Slowlette
Known as Yuji Inaka before his reincarnation. He was a 27-year-old office worker at a foodservice company. He was the youngest son of a family of six with three older sisters. After he died from overwork, he was reincarnated as Alfred Slowlette.
He is currently seven years old. He has chestnut-colored hair with brown eyes, his eyes look dead. He was given Spatial Magic by God, but he has access to all magic attributes.
He is generally laid-back and peaceful, but works hard for his dreams
087: Relaxed morning
I was woken by the bird calls outside of my window. I sat up and looked around my dimly lit room, I could hear the bird calls intermittently from outside. I regret leaving the warmth of my bed, but I stand up and head to the window. When I opened the shutters, the morning sun shines into my room. I take a deep breath while squinting into the morning light.
I feel the clean air enter my lungs and the feeling permeates my whole body. This is a habit I picked up after I was reincarnated. I tried to do it in the royal capital, but it didn’t feel right. The air must be cleaner out in the countryside.
088: Making Sweets
Agepan (fried bread) is a fried sweet bread that was served in school lunches for years. There are other types of fried bread, so I will remind that this is agepan occasionally. Recipe
Al asks for roll dough in this translation, but the original was koppe-pan. I just recently made a roll recipe that was close to the koppe-pan recipe, so I went with a phrase that didn’t need more explanation.
“What are laughing about Bartolo?” Al
“No, I just had a feeling the kid would be coming in soon.” Bartolo
089: Fried Food
Basic tempura batter is eggs, then ice water, then flour added stirring with chopsticks. Recipe
Sata andagi (Okinawan doughnuts) look a bit like hushpuppies but are closer to a donut hole (sort of). They’re in the same family, but the outside is crispy while the inside is cakey. Recipe
At the request of his cute little brother, Silvio agreed to pick some edible plants and mushroom. He headed out to the mountains so we wouldn’t run out, this should make an beautiful dinner menu. Food looks better when it can have ingredients of different colors like green or orange.
090: Hit and wear, rock-paper-scissors, pop!
An alternate explanation of the game in this chapter
“Hey, you” Eleanora
As usual, Eleanora barged into my room without knocking, this time she sounds suspicious.
“What?” Al
“What is the idea behind rolling up that cloth?” Eleanora
“I’m rolling it around a stick” Al
091: Silvio's Robust Defense
“Are you doing sword practice in your room?” Silvio
“No, no. It’s a game, just a game.” Al
I explain the game to Silvio, who says things like ‘Oh’ and ‘That’s right’.
“That’s a long name, but I can get it. So the winner of the rock-paper-scissors hits with the stick and the loser tries to block with the bowl?” Silvio
Silvio looks at the stick and bowl with interest, he figured out the game by just hearing the name.
092: The rice is gone!
New arc?
“I’m almost out of rice!” Al
I was sitting at the table in my second house when I realized the issue facing me. I started to groan like I was sick. I don’t have rice anymore, it’s gone. It’s been about a year since I got the rice that Triela bought somewhere. If I was the only one eating it, I’d have another year to go, but since my whole family was eating it…
“Far dew rokay bwoy?” Rumba
“Swallow, speak after swallowing.” Al
093: I want to go to Kagura
No way, rice isn’t even grown on the continent I live on?
Kagura, a country on another continent across the sea. Apparently the country eats rice as its staple food, and the country eats a lot of fish from the large fishing industry. Since it’s facing the sea, the fish is very fresh and the dishes are delicious and varied. Isn’t that alone worth the trip?
“There are apparently many people with black hair and eyes that have their own distinct culture.” Triela
“Oh!” Al
094: Reliable Escort
“Where is Kagura?” Eleanora & Rumba
Triela then explained the route to Kagura for Eleanora and Rumba. It’s getting silly how many times this has been explained. At least this is the quickest version of the explanation.
“Oh! Is that where rice is?” Rumba
Rumba had become fond of donburi dishes, so he was interested in Kagura’s food culture. He’s now asking about food culture in Kagura from Triela.
“Sashimi? They eat raw fish?” Rumba
“That’s right! I was so surprised when they served me red fish meat raw!” Triela
095: Silver Wind
I translated bonkyubon as stunning full figure, the literal version means large bust, small waist, large hips, allegedly from eating more red meat than seafood.
My parents allowed me to accompany Triela’s party to Kagura, so I found myself in front of the mansion in the early morning of the following day. Usually I am charmed by the romance of my warm bed, but I got up earlier than normal due to my excitement.
I want to experience the cuisine of Kagura, it should be different from that of the royal capital. Also, today was supposed to be a sword training day, so skipping that is nice too. I was sitting on the stairs in front of the mansion’s entrance with Eleanora, who was wearing a sullen face this morning.
096: The Egg Disappeared
Useful Magic terms:
- Ditch: Getting rid of an object that needs to vanish
- Inspection: Letting the audience look at a prop
- Sleight of Hand: Magic using cards or small objects, dependent on the quickness and skill of the magician
- Misdirection: Getting the audience to look at the wrong thing while the trick is occurring
- Palm: Hiding an object in the palm of your hand to vanish, produce, transpose or transform objects
We’re traveling under a cloudless blue sky, the scenery around us is green in all directions. We’re talking over the wheels of the carriage and horse.
097: Slime Pillow
Later that afternoon, I was listening to adventure stores from Ilya and Alisha, when we ran into a certain creature.
“It’s a slime…” Al
“That’s right” Ilya
Ilya is showing no desire to take down the monster, but slimes are a species of slow-moving monster that poses essentially no risk to us. It’ll eat both plants and animals, but it doesn’t have the ability to attack humans. It seems like it consumes dead animals, fallen nuts, wood chips, and various plants, then digests them over a long period of time.
098: Irving's Roar
“Slimey? Hey, Slimey…” Irving
On the morning of the second day after leaving Koriat Village, I was sleeping comfortably in the carriage with my new slime pillow when Irving’s voice woke me up.
“What’s happening, Irving?” Al
I get up and rub the sleep out of my eyes. I’m not a high-ranking or uptight noble son or a woman, so I slept in the same tent as the other guys. There may be something wrong with the slime pillow Irving has. Well, Irving shouldn’t be in danger, slimes are incredibly weak and the pillow is tied tightly.
099: Kicca Sightseeing
Yakitori is chicken skewers grilled over charcoal with tare sauce flavoring. Tare sauce is made of mirin, sake, soy sauce, sugar, and other flavorings to taste.
When we arrived in Kicca, I got off the carriage with Rumba and started exploring the city. There’s not an issue since Triela will take care of things like arranging the inn and dealing with luggage. We’ll stay overnight to replenish our supplies and such. Then we’ll set off for the port town of Esprit tomorrow morning.
100: Bed Battle at the Inn
After Rumba and I had a good tour around Kicca, we headed to the luxury inn that Triela reserved for us.
“It’s been a while since I slept in a bed!” Al
I was guided to my room, and then I dove into a fluffy bed. The bed makes a creaking noise and bounced me back up. I spend a minute bouncing on the bed to enjoy the feeling that you can only get from a bed. As expected, Triela found a luxury inn that caters to aristocrats and merchants. The bed and room are large and the inn has a calming atmosphere. You could even have two adults sleep in this room, there’s two good sized beds here.
101: An Order of Magnitude
How long have I been on this rattling carriage?
We bid farewell to the city of Kicca a while ago, so we can only see vast plains, trees, and in the distance, mountains. The sun has risen high into the sky, beaming down warm sunlight onto us. I’m currently sitting gloomily on the top of the carriage. I thought Irving and Mark might be similarly listless, but they are watching the surroundings without looking sleepy.
102: Playing Jenga Between Cities
On the second day after leaving the city of Kicca, we stopped at a forest lake to rest our horses. In the distance, large pale green mountain line up as if they want to surround us. When I look closer, I feel like the green color varies somewhat depending on the distance and tree cover. Yellow-green for trees that have new leaves, brown for trees that have dead leaves, and green for leaves in the main growing phase. It’s cheery to see the different colors.
103: Quiet Story ~ Third Princess Leila Looking Up at the Sky
Misfilt Royal Capital Castle, Princess Leila’s perspective
“Are you looking at the sky again?” Sariyah
“Yes…” Leila
Sariyah asked me since I was looking through my bedroom window. This is my favorite spot to enjoy the outside the world. When the window is opened I can hear the sound of the capital’s citizens.
It’s difficult to see the people, but I’ll gather magic energy in your eyes to strengthen them, so I can see the faces of people walking on the main boulevards.
104: Seawater? Is it tasty?
“Oh, have we made it to Esprit?” Al
We spent four days in the shaking carriage from Kicca, but we had finally arrived at the port city of Esprit in the Ardonia Kingdom. Most of the buildings are painted white and spread out from the harbor. I can see both large and small sailing ships in the port, most of which were loading or unloading cargo.
“Oi, hop to it! Make sure to unload it properly, you won’t leave until it’s right!” Captain
“Hey!” Sailors
105: A Seafood BBQ
“Oh! Isn’t that a scallop?!” Al
“Oh? What? Is that a special shellfish?” Rumba
While I was surprised to see scallops, Rumba came over. It’s delicious to eat scallops baked on a grill with butter and soy sauce. Butter and salt are great, but I would love to get some soy sauce. The alluring smell of soy sauce on a scallop…
“You seem acquainted with it, did you eat it in the royal capital? It seems that many people don’t know how to eat shellfish, but I love them!” Rumba
106: Scallops with Soy Sauce
Sashimi is thin strips of seafood served with soy sauce as a dipping sauce.
Yaki Onigiri is rice balls grilled over charcoal flavored with soy sauce. Recipe
Tamago Gohan (egg rice) is an egg cracked over a bowl of hot rice flavored with soy sauce. Recipe
Scallion-soy dipping sauce is exactly as it sounds, soy sauce with chopped green onions, with a bit of rice vinegar, sugar, and chile oil. Recipe
“Where, when, and how did you get this?!” Al
“Please calm down, Mr. Alfred! I can’t speak when you’re grabbing my shirt!” Triela
I may have been a bit aggressive when I approached Triela to question him, so I stepped back for a minute. Triela takes the chance to straighten his shirt. While he’s doing that, I open the lid of the small jar he had placed on the table.
A salty and fragrant scent peculiar to soy sauce wafts out, I can see a dark liquid inside. Oh, this is the dream. A seasoning that Japanese people are in love with. Soy Sauce
107: Captain Douglas of the Kaiou Pirates
My brain wrote 2020 instead of 2021 for the time to release… oops.
A seafood barbecue, sightseeing around Esprit, purchasing food to store using Spatial Magic, three days in Esprit flew for me while doing those sorts of things. In the early morning of the fourth day, I found myself at the port in front of the ship that will take us to Kagura.
Mornings for the port of Esprit start early. Fishermen are busily moving around the docks getting ready to go out for the day. Some boats look to have recently come back and are offloading their catch while taking on a new crew for today. The harvested fish from those boats have been moved to the market, so that’s crowded with customers. That area sorts, processes, and preserves the catch.
108: Let's Start Our Sea Journey and Playing Tag on a Ship
“Ok, y’all! Let’s sail!” Captain Douglas
“Hey!” Sailors
As Douglas’s voice echoed over the ship, the sailors rush up the rigging to set the sails on the ship. It’s cool so see so many sailors moving in concert.
“Even though they’re climbing on ropes, they’ve moving so quickly.” Al
“That’s their lot, I ain’t fit for that no more.” Douglas
Douglas replied to my question, since he was nearby. Although he acts like it’s nothing special, I can feel a bit of pride emanating from him.
109: Alfred's Sky Fortress
“The sky is a beautiful blue today as well…” Al
I look up at the sky that fills my field of vision while laying down in the crow’s nest. It has enough space for two adults to stand, if you packed them in like sardines, you’d get four, barely. I can easily lie down comfortably in that space since I’m a seven-year-old child.
110: A Wonderful Profession
“So hot!” Al
The sweltering hot air woke me up roughly. I can feel a line of sweat rolling down my forehead. My body is sweating and my shirt is sticking to my skin. The towel I had on top of me is only contributing to the heat. I pull the towel off quickly.
Why is the air so hot?
111: Laziness Obedience
On the rear area of the ship, Alisha and Ilya are sitting on wooden chairs taking their tea time. While they tilted their teacups, the sea breeze swept past their hair and cheeks.
I’ve noticed the sea winds are a bit rougher than the winds of Koriat Village’s plains, but the irregular gusting brings a nice variety to them. I’ve also gotten used to the constant sound of waves and the honks of seabirds. The sea had a different flavor of nature that is entertaining.
112: This Kind of Fishing is Good Too
“Hey, Al! Let’s go fishing!” Rumba
Rumba opened the cabin door while I was lying in a hammock in the cabin.
“Fishing?” Al
“Yes, fishing! We’ll catch some fishes to eat for dinner.” Rumba
Rumba brandishes the fishing rod with a smile. Even though it’s a fishing rod, it has no reel. It’s just a rod with a long thread at the tip. You can put things like floats, weights, and hooks on the thread. The rod is a long thing at close to 3 meters, so you’d hit the ceiling unless you keep it diagonal.
113: Appreciation for Cooking Techniques
deboss: A design sunk into a surface, usually paper.
fillet edges: Rounding off a 90° corner on a wood piece.
“Ok lads, we’ll bring in the big fish too! We can’t lose to an aristocrat who’s just a fare!” Douglas
“Oh!” Sailors
When Douglas encourages the sailors, the reply vigorously and return to their fishing spots. It seems like since a child (me) caught a dos tuna, the sailors don’t want to lose. Many people are holding a fishing rod while glaring at the sea’s surface. Would a fish be attracted to an angry face? I doubt it.
114: Eating Sashimi
“Hey, stop joking! I can’t believe that’s delicious? It shouldn’t be something humans can enjoy!” Mark screams.
“I know children can be curious, but aren’t you being crazy?” Irving yells.
“It’ll be fine, once you cook it properly, it’s very delicious! I’m sure you’ll love octopus.” Al
“I don’t believe you!” Irving and Mark deny vehemently.
I guess when you look at the undulating brown body studded with suckers, you’d question my sanity…
115: Accelerating the Ship
The morning of the second day after departing Esprit
After breakfast, I was having a tea time at the rear of the ship with Ilya and Alisha. I was enjoying the pleasant sunshine of the morning. Ilya and Alisha were enjoying the tea I brewed, sipping it with gentle expressions.
Unlike yesterday, there’s very little wind today, I don’t think the ship is moving much at all. A slow trip isn’t terrible, but if the wind doesn’t pick up, this trip is going to take quite a while.
“Ms. Wizard, can we ask for a little Wind Magic?” Sailor called from the deck.
116: The end of the cruise
Triela’s words made my peaceful mood disappear. Ilya had explained back in Esprit exactly how dangerous swordfish are. They’re a fish with fins as sharp as a knife.
“If they arrive in a horde, they’re extremely dangerous…” Al
I guess someone was listening to my jinx invitation as silver swordfish started to appear in droves. Fish with large silver fins are filling the lush sea below us. I’d like to enjoy the scene of fish leaping from the sea, but those fish are dangerous with fins as sharp as razor blades. This isn’t a relaxing scenario.
117: Arriving in Kagura
We made it to the fifth day of using Wind Magic to accelerate the ship then we began to see land. We can barely see a city with signs of humans in it, not just endless sea or another uninhabited island. I can spot buildings that look to have tiled roofs lined up, and there are people walking around wearing loose clothes like kimonos on the beach and harbor. It feels like I’m watching a historical drama.
118: Utopia
I think I’ve had a small cold the last few days, at least, I can say that I’ve been under the weather this week.
Despite the various temptations of the Kagura street food, we managed to arrive at the inn, guided by Triela.
“Welcome Triela party, welcome to the Sunny Inn.” Landlady
119: Ryokan Bathing
Sorry about this series not getting any updates. Each chapter is pretty long, so when I’m tired I’d rather work on a short chapter (other series) than a long chapter. Hopefully my new two chapters on two series schedule works better.
“Why did you say my real age? If I was allowed to tell her I was only five, I might have made it into the female side!” Al
“Damn you! Was that some strategy for your own pleasure?” Irving
“After throwing us away without a second thought!” Mark
