100: Bed Battle at the Inn
Settings
After Rumba and I had a good tour around Kicca, we headed to the luxury inn that Triela reserved for us.
“It’s been a while since I slept in a bed!” Al
I was guided to my room, and then I dove into a fluffy bed. The bed makes a creaking noise and bounced me back up. I spend a minute bouncing on the bed to enjoy the feeling that you can only get from a bed. As expected, Triela found a luxury inn that caters to aristocrats and merchants. The bed and room are large and the inn has a calming atmosphere. You could even have two adults sleep in this room, there’s two good sized beds here.
If a person connected them, it would be quite a wide bed. I think I should be the person to do such a thing, so I pulled the other bed over with Psychic magic. And… they’re together. This makes the large bed even larger, so I roll around to enjoy the size.
The feeling of sinking into the mattress is comfortable. Plus, there’s a pleasant floral scent from the sheets that drives away the weariness from my journey.
After leaving Koriat Village, I could only sleep in a simple tent with a blanket. I can’t say I got good sleep in that situation. I can sleep anywhere, but I get my best sleep in a bed with nice sheets. There aren’t any insects, or at least way less, when you sleep indoors. Well, I’ll try to enjoy my sleep even when I’m roughing it, but even a child’s body can get aches from sleeping like that.
This bed should give me a great night’s sleep. I won’t have to moan when I wake up because my back hurts.
I move my body from the prone position and prop myself on my side to look out the window. The sun has already set and the sky has been engulfed by darkness. I can spot lights from magic tools in and around the nearby buildings. It’s sort of quaint to see the little lights shining.
While I’m lying down and enjoying the nightscape, I hear some voices from the corridor.
“Hey! I want the back bed!” Irving
“Huh? Don’t be silly, Irving. You don’t sleep soundly, plus you’re wont to visit the bathroom during the night.” Mark
“It’ll be fine! Really, is that why you’re pushing me to take the bed closer to the door? I’d like to have the other bed sometime, like tonight!” Irving
Sounds like Irving and Mark are arguing over who gets which bed. It reminds me of my previous life to argue about the who gets which bed, just like a school trip from my childhood. I don’t want to sleep with those that are arguing like that.
“Then I’ll take the middle bed.” Rumba
“Wait! Rumba, please take the back!” Irving & Mark
“Oh?” Rumba
A wild Rumba appears and the opinions of Irving and Mark fall to the wayside. Rumba has astounding snores, you’d want to get as far away from that as you can. Now Mark and Irving will want to fight for the closest bed to the door to get away from the snore machine.
“So, I’ll take the bed near the entrance. I’ll need the bathroom, so that makes sense, right?” Irving
“No, didn’t you get that bed last time? Irving should take the middle bed this time. Unless you want the rear bed?” Mark
“Hey, weren’t you saying the reverse not so long ago?” Irving
“Weren’t you asking to have the rear bed?” Mark
Oh, this dispute isn’t going to a nice place. I sigh when I think of how long this conflict will last. By the way, the women are upstairs and have likely changed into pajamas and are having a friendly conversation right now.
After a bout of swearing while I think about the flower garden upstairs, the corridor quieted down. Oh, is it over? I thought it would turn into some contest like drinking or throwing pillows, what happened?
I can’t hear any voices in the corridor? Even if there was some agreement, I should have heard something. This is worrying, my sixth sense of danger detection that Eleanora trained into me is ringing like a warning siren.
Answering that warning, I jumped out of bed, padded over to the door, and put my ear to the door to pick up the discreet conversation outside.
“Mr. Alfred’s room should have two large beds, if the two are put together, there should be enough room for both of us and him to sleep.” Mark
“I see, it’s very big for that child, and there would be adequate space for us as well. Can we impose like that on a nobleman?” Irving
“Alfred is a generous soul, unlike the aristocrats who despise commoners. It’s a possibility.” Mark
“I see, if we can get in, I’ll go along with your scheme.” Irving
I can hear the sound of their feet sneaking closer, they’re trying to invade my blessed realm! What’s more, they’re trying to take advantage of my amiable personality.
I’ll avoid this problem while keeping my comfortable bed. I’ll just block them from entering my room. I quickly moved my ear off the door and set the latch. Soon, the rattling sound of someone trying to open the door is heard.
I immediately turned off the magic tool that was providing light and dived into the bed.
“Ah?” Mark says in an astonished voice.
There’s now a knocking sound coming from the door.
“Hey! Mr. Alfred, are you awake?” Mark
“I have an interesting item, would you like to check it out? I think you’ll be delighted?” Irving
“Please open the door!” Mark
Two people raise their voices while knocking on the door, they’re desperate to have a good night’s sleep. Of course, I don’t have to respond since their real intentions are obvious. I’ll just fall asleep with things as they are, I want to have a good night’s sleep without anyone snoring or disturbing me.
“Hey! I know you’re still awake! Please do us a kindness!” Mark
“It’s been less than a minute since you locked the door and turned out the light! No way are you asleep already!” Irving
I’m a child, we go to sleep early. I’m a good boy who needs his sleep. It’s been a while since I was able to go to sleep in a bed like this.
“Guests, please quiet down as you are disturbing the other guests.” Hotel Employee
“Sorry” Mark & Irving
The two were quickly dealt with by a hotel employee who noticed them making loud noises in the hallway.
The next morning
After eating breakfast at the hotel, we left Kicca and head for the port city Esprit in the Ardonia Kingdom. I bid farewell to the comfortable bed and start to dread the next four days of tent camping, after that I’ll have to spend a week on a boat…
Even if I can get more Japanese-like food, this journey is rough. I almost want to return to the mansion, even if I have to use Transfer magic. I try to distract myself from that self-destructive line of thought by climbing onto the carriage where I find two other people: Irving and Mark.
“You two look rough, did you have trouble sleeping?” Al
“This rascal, like he doesn’t remember yesterday evening.” Irving
Irving turns toward me, he looks like he aged a few years since yesterday. Mark look the same as he rubs his eyes drowsily. It’s obvious the two didn’t get a good night’s sleep.
“When I got back to the room, Rumba had pushed all three beds together and was sleeping in the middle.” Irving
Oh, so Rumba went ahead and made a large bed since he thought Mark and Irving had alternative arrangements? I could see him doing that.
“That person’s snoring is so loud, plus he’s a restless sleeper. I couldn’t stay asleep for long…” Mark mutters as he stares out into the distance.
I could easily imagine a Rumba rolling around on the bed and swinging his arms and legs.
“So it came to that, did you both have to sleep however you could in the bed with Rumba?” Al
“Oh…” Mark & Irving
Two people answer me with a lifeless response. Tears spill from Irving’s eyes as the wind sweeps by us.
