098: Irving's Roar
Settings
“Slimey? Hey, Slimey…” Irving
On the morning of the second day after leaving Koriat Village, I was sleeping comfortably in the carriage with my new slime pillow when Irving’s voice woke me up.
“What’s happening, Irving?” Al
I get up and rub the sleep out of my eyes. I’m not a high-ranking or uptight noble son or a woman, so I slept in the same tent as the other guys. There may be something wrong with the slime pillow Irving has. Well, Irving shouldn’t be in danger, slimes are incredibly weak and the pillow is tied tightly.
“Hey, are you serious? Respond to my Slimey! You were so comfortable until just a little while ago!” Irving cries as he slaps his pillow.
Slimey held a certain elasticity until recently, but there’s no elasticity in it now. When Irving touches it, it just makes a rustling sound like water. Irving closes his eyes and hugs his pillow in mourning.
“Irving…” Al
“It’s turning so cold…” Irving
“Irving…” Al
“It was working so well until a few minutes ago” Irving
“Did you remember to feed Slimey?” Al
When he heard that question, Irving immediately froze. Slimes will die when they can’t eat for two days. When it dies, the slime loses their elasticity and turns into a liquid state. Since a pillow needs elasticity, it is no longer functional as a pillow. Therefore, you need to feed the slime things like grass to keep it alive, that way the slime is fed enough to keep it alive and not enough to let it escape. It’s two birds with one stone, I feel like this strategy of exploitation is something humans would love.
“He said he dreamed of becoming a king slime, didn’t he?” Al
Irving continues to wail, ignoring my jokes. Slimes can’t talk, obviously.
“Don’t die until you become a king slime! Someday you’ll reach your destiny and form a kingdom of slimes!” Al
Irving keeps ignoring my silliness while sobbing, it’s an unreasonably good acting ability for an adventurer. As Irving sobbed as if he was mourning one of his companions, a different person was heard through the wall.
“You’re annoying! Some people are still sleeping, so shut it!” Alisha
“I’m sorry” Al & Irving
We apologized to the furious Alisha. When you think about it, it’s the early morning. Many people are still sleeping, this isn’t the time to scream. Irving laid the dead slime pillow on the floor and fell back asleep as if nothing had occurred.
Will I get back to sleep?
We kept moving towards Kicca while experimenting with the slime pillow idea. Various materials were evaluated to prevent the slime from escaping. I discussed with Triela about how to manage the slime.
Recently, I discovered that using magic to cool or warm the slime will change the firmness. I was curious to see if the pillow would be more comfortable if it was chilled, so I used Ice Magic. When the slime was cooled, it became firmer and felt like it was clinging to my skin. It really resembles a memory foam pillow now. It feels so good to just poke it with my finger. I was delighted by the discovery and I slept comfortably that night while enjoying the firmer feel.
The next night, I wondered what would happen if the reverse happened, so I warmed the slime with fire magic. The obvious happen and it lost some firmness, though it didn’t turn into a liquid. I was worried for a second I had killed it, but it didn’t lose all its elasticity. After confirming my suspicions, I had another nice night of sleep.
I possess a wonderful slime pillow that I can adjust according to my taste. If it didn’t involve sleeping on a monster, all of humanity would buy it immediately. I’m not worried since the marketing isn’t my problem.
So, Nord told me that slimes are vulnerable to Fire Magic and Ice Magic. Well, it is a liquid monster, so it’s not surprising that those two magics are particularly effective. When liquids are cooled, they turn into solids. Triela seemed surprised by this, but that turned into lamentations since Ice Magic users are rare right now. Many more magicians can use Fire Magic, but it seems few can adjust the effect so it doesn’t burn up the slime. Excepting those who have magic as their career, most Fire Magic users are limited to Fireballs and starting fires. They don’t have the magic control to roast meat or warm a slime pillow.
Because of that, it would be better to use magic tools, but that adds to the price, which will cut out a significant portion of the market. I’d be willing to buy and use magic tools, but that’s my opinion. Some people will stick with regular pillows if the cost is high. So the target market for the slime pillow is aristocrats and rich merchants. I’m worried that market would be worried about sleeping on a monster, but Triela says that they will definitely buy.
To be honest, I don’t want to go back to a normal pillow.
While we kept experimenting like that, the journey to Kicca passed in the blink of an eye.
On the afternoon of the third day, we arrived at the city of Kicca. It lies in a kingdom to the east of Misfilt Kingdom and south of the Ardonia Kingdom. If we continued to the west, we’d find the kingdom’s capital, which isn’t as big of a city. Kicca lies in a useful location for trade, so all sorts of people gather in the city. It’s not a fancy or beautiful as the Misfilt royal capital, and the walls aren’t as strong, but the business is as lively as the royal capital.
I’m impressed the prosperity of the city as we entered on the horse-drawn carriage. When I saw the guards running over, I worriedly looked around for the bad guards. I was still worried, so I asked Irving and Mark.
“Hey, they aren’t here, right?” Al
“The gatekeepers you sometimes find at the royal capital?” Irving asks me with a disgusted expression.
I nod my head up and down. Based on their expressions, they must have been harassed on multiple occasions. It must be hard to be a gatekeeper, but is that necessary?
“If those kind were commonly found as gatekeepers, I wouldn’t work as an adventurer.” Irving
“They are only in the royal capital, they like the handsome men there.” Mark
Mark volunteered some disturbing information. To be honest, you do find many handsome aristocrats and merchants in the royal capital. It’s an all-you-can-eat for that kind of person in that role.
When I asked Triela how they weren’t thrown in jail, it turned out those two were great at ferreting out fraudulent goods and smugglers. Apparently they’re well-regarded by a prestigious aristocrat as well.
I can skip the line if I use Transfer magic to visit the royal capital, but if I have to attend another party, I’ll have to go through the line. Next time that happens, I’ll have to pray I won’t go through the South Gate.
