005: More Magic
Settings
That night, I pretended to go to sleep and waited for Elna to leave the room, then I opened the magic book in my bed. There aren’t any flashlights in this world, the residents use light from magic instead. Some use it directly, but there are also magic tools made for the purpose. On one of my adventures, I saw one of those tools in my Father’s office.
For future reference, a magic tool consists of a magic circle that defines the result and a magic stone that powers the magic circle. Apparently, magic stones are found inside defeated monsters, or by mining in magic rich areas. Keep in mind that the magic rich areas are also inhabited by strong monsters, so mining for magic stones must be a difficult endeavor. I’m not planning on doing any of that.
Well, that was an interesting aside, but I finally have a magic book to read so let’s get on to that. I already have the basics down pat, thanks to God’s tutorial and Eleanora’s story time. I can skip past the introductory chapter.
The book introduces five different low level magics, “Fire Magic”, “Water Magic”, “Earth Magic”, “Wind Magic”, and “Attribute-less Magic”. In addition, there are specialist magics that are derivatives of other magics, like “Thunder Magic” or “Ice Magic”. There aren’t many magicians that can use specialist magics. The chapter ends with: “I sincerely hope that you who are reading this book will become an excellent magician and assist your country, the Misfilt Kingdom”. While the book’s depiction of Misfilt Kingdom is pretty, it’d be nice if they had drawn in some of the surrounding countries as well.
I don’t want to seem stereotypical, but I was quite excited to start learning magic. I makes my worn-out twenty-seven year old soul feel excited… Though my current body isn’t even one year old…
First of all, let’s go with water magic. Water magic, since it’s not dangerous like fire magic.
“I’m Seeking Pure Water, Gather” Al
That didn’t seem to work. Perhaps I don’t have the right image in my heart? Or maybe I’m not enunciating correctly with my baby tongue. I still can’t quite get those syllables out sometimes. Perhaps I need to start practicing tongue twisters to improve?
Let’s try this again, with a stronger image! Ah, it worked. I now have a palmful of water to enjoy.
Now I’ll be able to make potable water anywhere I am, this is a great achievement! But this magical water is pretty bland, so I’d rather drink some nice countryside water instead. City water from my past life had the same problem, chlorination keep it safe, but the taste suffered from residual chlorine.
Though some cities are able to improve their water quality above others. Hmm, I wonder if I could find a way to do the same with magical water?
Next spell type is wind! I wonder if this spell will make a small breeze?
“I seek the wind of peace in the atmosphere.” Al
I envision a peaceful breeze from a spring day, not a strong breeze from an electric fan.
The air flutters, I can feel a nice breeze. I haven’t been able to enjoy this since I’ve been kept inside since my reincarnation.
Hmm, I didn’t put much magic energy into this spell. If I put in a bunch more, would that cause a bigger breeze or is there a limit to the wind speed for this spell? Let’s try again, with more feeling this time…
Fwafwafwafwa!
I quickly close my eyes in the face of this unexpectedly strong wind. Far too strong! I immediately stop the flow of magic energy so the breeze will stop.
Luckily I don’t have much in my room to blow away. Only the curtains were blown around, and they just were no longer tied up. I’m glad for my room’s simplicity at this moment. I don’t want to imagine the result of using this magic in a filing room, that would be the worst possibility…
There’s no ground around me to try Earth magic, so that will wait for another day. Fire magic would be too dangerous, I don’t think my baby heart could take it.
Three years old
It’s been two years since my first magic experiments. I’ve grown up to where I can walk and run for some time. Recently, magic energy exhaustion has been taking longer than I’d like, and the feeling of tiredness that goes along with it has gotten more severe. I wonder if there’s a relationship there?
“Oh, Al is napping over here again!” Eleanora
My older sister, Eleanora, has come over and is staring at me. I’m currently stretched out on this nice grassy sward behind our mansion where I like to nap after my magic training is complete.
Eleanora has grown up nicely to an age of nine. She still has her reddish-brown ponytail, though she has started to take after her mother in terms of proportions. Her face has slender lines and she has powerful brown eyes.
“I’m just taking a short break, so it’s fine to chat. Your eyes look dead again? Al?” Eleanora
“No, I was just napping before I woke up. Eyes can look a bit weird after waking up.” Al
Unluckily, my appearance is positively average, unlike my family members. Or is it that my family is too high-spec? I have chestnut hair like my mother, but my brown eyes are a bit on the thin side. That’s all I am.
As for my dead eyes, I’m not afflicted by anything, I’m just tired from my magic practice. With a nice nap I’m revived back to normalcy. If you’re overtired, do your eyes look like a dead fist? I hope this isn’t happening too often to me. I sure hope my last life’s stress hasn’t followed me into this life, I should be a healthy three-year-old.
“Mom asked me to come and find you to make sure you get some exercise.” Eleanora
My mother sometimes worries about me, who is strangely self-sufficient. I should be a curious three-year-old, wandering around and asking questions of everyone, but I spend a good bit of time in my room. Really, I’m practicing magic in my room, where it is easy to hide the magic. I’m a fast-growing, intelligent child! I’m able to get away with cloistering myself away from that excuse.
Eleanora is annoyed that I’m not jumping up to go on an outing with her.
“But I went with you to the river yesterday, right?” Al
“It’s a kind sister’s intuition, we should go again today!” Eleanora
How about that? Eleanora is uniquely benevolent as a sister… Not! Whether I’m napping or practicing magic in my room, Eleanora will jump in and drag me off to some activity she’s interested in. I have to scarf down any sweets I get in fear of Eleanora taking a share!
“To me, Eleanora looks like a demon.” Al
“Stop wasting time, let’s go!” Eleanora
Eleanora’s soft hand drags me away to another activity.
