December 2020 Thoughts

New scheduler (v3) is working, but I’m still not always getting things done by saturday night. I’ll try to improve.
Comments are here, you can load the comments for a post by clicking the Load Comments link. Google and email works and I’m looking at Twitter and Microsoft logins for later this month. (Didn’t happen)
I didn’t want to load them by default for page speed reasons. I can push an entire chapter in 30kB transferred (or 10kB for regular visitors), but loading comments puts the same page up to 411kB. To be honest, once the comment css and js are cached, we’re down to 6kB, but I like loading comments for aesthetic reasons too. For comparison, I visited a single chapter on several other translation sites, where the page sizes were at least 2MB, usually 5MB+.
I’ll also need to spend time on getting 2nd and 3rd projects going. We’ll see
how those go in the new year. 2nd should come out in the first full week of 2021,
I’ll do 4 chapters a week of both Slowlife and the other one. Planned schedule is
below. I didn’t start a 3rd project so I can work on a video game project instead.
Series | Sunday | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Slow Life | X | X | X | X | |||
2 Villains | X | X | X | X |
I had to add the category field to the rss feed so the second project can get picked up by NovelUpdates. I probably broke the fonts when I was trying to fix the font variants, so everything was italicized for a few days. But otherwise, the site is reaching stability.
Something I want to look into is trying to give different characters different patterns of speech. I have some basic ideas in that area, perhaps I’ll read a book on it sometime after Christmas.
I started my first homebrew lager, hopefully I’ll get to drink it near the end of January 2021, lagers take much longer than ales.
I read the latest volume of The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (Hey, How About Treason?), and it was pretty disappointing. I liked the previous volumes, reading them multiple times, but volume 5 seemed to be missing something. Maybe I liked the storyline about the Empire, and 5 didn’t have anything there, so maybe I disliked how it started new story threads without advancing the previous story threads.
