A mansion nestled in the depths of the forest.

Tonight will play host to a horrifying activity

“Hahaha… Decide, Charlotte” Allen

The two are in a dark room with curtains blocking off the moonlight. Sparse candles illuminate a young man and woman standing in near each other. The young man is in his early twenties, he looks well-organized with sharp eyes. His visage is disturbing, the right half of his hair is deep black while the left half is bright white, and under the hair is his blood-red eyes. He’s all and thin, wearing a hooded robe like an evil wizard.

One day in early spring

“Hey, Demon Lord! I’ve got mail for you!” Postwoman

“How many times must I tell you to not call me by that name?” Allen

The usual postwoman rang the doorbell of Allen’s mansion that morning. She has fluffy cobalt-green hair with cat ears growing out of her head. She’s a female beastman of the cat species, one of many in the country. She’s dressed in a postman’s uniform. She tilts her head at Allen’s comment.

“Even if you say that, it’s not just Myaha who calls you the Demon Lord?” Myaha

“I can’t help that, what’s the mail for today?” Allen

“Here” Myaha

Allen was given two letters, a newspaper, and a parcel.

“Do you have anything to mail today?” Myaha

“Just this” says Allen as he hands over a box. “The contents are a magical medicine like usual. Be careful when handling since it’s a glass bottle.”

“Of course, we’re quick, safe and super cute, that’s our motto.” Myaha

She salutes with an exaggerated manner, though her service is far more serious than her flippant act. None of the bottles shipped with her company have been broken.

“Hello, who is this?” Allen

Allen calls out to the person lying in the grass, but the other person doesn’t reply. As he approached the person, it became clear it was a young girl. She’s beautiful and wears a fine dress. She’s like a princess, except the dress is tattered and the complexion is poor. I can see small breaths escaping her pale lips, so she seems to be alive, but exhausted.

“Hmm, are you a runaway, or did you run away from a kidnapping?” Allen

“Well, I guess I’ll wait for you to wake up?” Allen

Allen’s living room is a disaster area. Moldy bread and dried herbs compete for space, junk and not-junk pile up so badly that most of the floor can’t be seen. The only open space was the area around a leather sofa, which was barely walkable. Allen spends most of his day around the sofa, reading or taking naps.

Now, the girl is sleeping on the sofa. Allen stares at her sleeping face, he strokes her face while murmuring his thoughts.

“A felon who moved a country’s forces? I can’t see it. It just doesn’t make sense?” Allen

Charlotte continued to cry for a while. Quickly, Allen offered her a handkerchief and a cup of tea, which she gratefully accepted. Eventually, she was able to calm down and began her story.

“I mean, it was so sudden” Charlotte

It all started a week ago, at the birthday party of the second Prince Cecil. He was holding it in the royal castle of the Kingdom of Neruz, and his fiancée Charlotte would be invited as guest. The two had met very few times and only exchanged a few words at each meeting.

“Your job would be a live-in maid” Allen

Allen explains that the work expected from such would be general housework. An allowance above room and board would be provided, along with three meals a day and snacks as reasonable. Allen’s mansion is much larger than Allen needs, so adding a Charlotte into the mix wouldn’t inconvenience him. Charlotte begins to panic from the shock.

“Didn’t you hear my story? I’m running from the authorities!” Charlotte

“Well, yeah. Concealing a women with such a background could be said to be a poor decision.” Allen

Three days after Allen employed the villainous daughter

“Well, is it over?” Charlotte

“Great!” Allen

Allen and Charlotte are in the living room that looks as beautiful as a palace. The hellish trash that was there a few days ago has disappeared. The floor is visible and no dust can be seen. Soft sunlight shines through the spotless windows to show the time of day.

“No, this is an amazing job. I wouldn’t have thought you were Duke’s daughter.” Allen

“I had to help out at home…” Charlotte

Certainly, Allen said she was free for the afternoon, it was her time to spend as she wants. That’s the literal meaning of the word.

But, who would count the wood grains on the floor? Even if you don’t have anything else to do? Isn’t that beyond a last resort activity?

“Oh, Charlotte. Come over here.” Allen

“Yes?” Charlotte

Three hours later

“I’m back!” Allen

“Oh, welcome home?” Charlotte

Charlotte greets Allen, who had just returned bearing a large package, in a confused but proper manner. After declaring that he’ll teach her pleasurable activities, Allen ran out of the house. He was running to the nearby city to buy various things.

By the time he got back, the sky was dark and the crescent moon was floating comfortably overhead. Allen drops his packages on the table in the living room, there’s four boxes and three bags. Charlotte becomes more and more worried as she stares at the packages.

Inside the box were several colorful cakes. There’s strawberry shortcake, chocolate ganache cake, beautiful fruit tarts, mille-feuille, along with several others.

“But that’s not the end of it!” Allen

At that point, Allen opens the rest of the boxes and bags. More colorful sweets are revealed, along with fruit juices, popcorn, etc. In the blink of an eye, the table is covered with all sorts of tasty treats. Charlotte’s eyes are wide with surprise.

“Then, I’ll have some…” Charlotte sighs as she glances at Allen’s face.

“Mr. Allen should choose first, and I’ll just take what’s left.” Charlotte

“No, no. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth.” Allen

“eh?” Charlotte asks as her eyes expand in surprise.

“So… is all this for me?” Charlotte

“Have you only realized it now? It’s all for you.” Allen

“Hmph… huh?” Allen

Allen notices the dazzling sunlight through his closed eyelids. As his sleepiness fades away, he realizes the pains over his body due to his choice of sleeping spot. He peels his face off of his desk.

“Hmm… I guess I fell asleep without realizing it?” Allen

The living room, kitchen, and other common rooms have already been cleaned. After that was the storeroom and garden, Allen had told Charlotte those weren’t high priority…

When he said that, Charlotte made a bitter smile and replied.

“Since I’m indebted to you, I thought I would make sure things were handled.” Charlotte

“You’re so serious…” Allen

Allen is amazed, but is worried about Charlotte’s long-term health if she continues at her current pace. He’s not sure what to make of her. He can’t spot any problems with her physical condition, so he guesses that she’ll be fine for now.

Charlotte has a sharp intake of breath, it’s essentially an affirmative reaction.

Allen speaks to Myaha while sighing. He could brainwash Myaha to force her to ignore Charlotte’s presence, but he doesn’t want to go that far if there’s an easier option.

“Myaha, there’s a reason for this…” Allen

“It’s fine, Mr. Demon Lord.” Myaha reassures as she smiles and smacks her chest.

Noon the Next Day

“Your order is being delivered!” Myaha

“Hmm, you’ve done a great job.” Allen

Around the end of lunchtime, Myaha cheerfully knocked on the front door. She had brought along a lot of packages, which she carried into the living room.

She’s brought along a small cloth bag and a large rectangular wood box, it’s large enough to hold an adult person. It was a large load, but Myaha isn’t sweating or breathing hard. She looks justifiably proud of her delivery.

“So, this is my father?” Charlotte

“Yep, and your ex-fiancé” Allen says as he nods.

I made sure to emphasize the “ex” part, it’s important.

“You need to stop being walked over. You need to know when to get angry.” Allen

“Get angry…” Charlotte

“Exactly” Allen

Not just Charlotte, but also Myaha was shocked. Allen nods his head as he enters a calm state.

“What, didn’t you hear me? I told you to hit me.” Allen

“Well, I heard it! Why?” Charlotte

“Mr. Demon Lord… I didn’t think you had that kind of hobby…” Myaha

“Don’t misunderstand. This just a part of being cool.” Allen replies with a shrug.

It’s an unseasonably warm and dry weather today, a mysterious figure approaches Allen’s mansion.

“So, over there?” Mysterious Figure

The figure stares at the mansion for a while, but soon sets off to the mansion’s front door as if a decision had been reached. Their gaze is piercing, but there isn’t anyone else around the forest, so it went unnoticed.

“So, what’s the problem? Is my uncle still set on bringing me back?” Allen

“No way, Dad’s given up.” Erika shrugs.

She drinks the tea she was served while standing, then returns the cup to the table.

“Besides, I doubt teaching at the academy will last for a loner like you. Aren’t you more inclined to announce research results by mailing them in?” Erika

This is a day late, so there will be 5 chapters this week for this series.

Erika squeezes Charlotte’s hand and puts on a sympathetic face.

“You’ve had it so hard up til now! You’ve done your best, so let me know if there’s anything I can do! I’ll do my best to assist!” Erika

“Oh, thank you very much?” Charlotte asks confusedly.

“So… are you going to kick me out?” Erika

The three soon found themselves in the city.

“Why?” Charlotte screams.

“What are you unhappy about?” Allen retorts.

The three are in the city near the mansion where Allen resides. It’s a reasonably large city with several popular dungeons nearby, so there’s plenty of adventurers coming and going. The head office of the courier service that Myaha works at is also located in this town.

The city is filled with a normal amount of hustle and bustle. Allen was visiting about every five days at one point to buy daily necessities and ingredients. After those items, he’d visit the magic tool shop and bookstore. Allen was one of the few who regularly visited those places.

He never expected to be in the store he found himself in now.

Charlotte is very worried at Allen’s fake heart attack while Erika just shrugs.

“As usual, my older brother is astoundingly crazy. Hey, Charlotte, you should try on this one next!” Erika

“But his heart stopped? Is he okay?” Charlotte

“It was just a second or two, no problem. Well, shouldn’t be.” Erika

Allen is sitting outside the fitting booth, listening to the sounds of moving cloth and the voices of the women on the other side of the curtains.

“So, it’s a clasp on the back of the neck? Can you lean back a bit?” Erika

“Does this work?” Charlotte

“Hmm… yep. That is difficult to fasten.” Erika

The two are engaged in an ordinary conversation.

Two hours later

At a fashionable coffee shop, the three were enjoying a tea break. The terrace they’re on faces the sunny main street and overlooks the bustling traffic.

“Ok, I’ve bought a lot!” Allen

“Hmm, that’s a pretty significant amount.” Erika

“Huh, hey…” Charlotte

In that way, the three spent their tea break relaxing. Before you would notice, the sun started to set and the road traffic changed. Earlier in the day, it was full of ordinary citizens, but the current group was full of adventurers returning from the dungeons for the day. After the sun sets, they’ll decompress from today’s adventurer at the bar eating food and drinking their fill of booze.

(Is Charlotte worried?) Allen thinks to himself.

“Hello, hello. Welcome.” Shopkeeper

The young female shopkeeper greets Charlotte with that response and a slight glance up from the book she was reading. She quickly returned to reading. Her store is a simple one made of cloth and wood. Necklaces and other items are spread out under the roof, that was full of holes. Many items are around one silver coin, it’s a typical cheap general store.

This was a relatively warm weekend, so I spent a good bit of time working outside on my garden preparations.

“Hey, nice guy!” Shopkeeper

“Huh” Allen

The shopkeeper called out when it was clear I wasn’t running away. She comes out of the store and whispers to Allen.

“Those guys are part of a party that’s been stirring up trouble lately. You should run away before anything happens. I’ll handle them, somehow.” Shopkeeper

Boof!

Rogue A flies to a nearby wall and makes a large crater on it. He’s not moving, but seems to be breathing. It seems Allen chose to limit himself.

“Well, hey! … Ah, my bro!” Rogue B shouts as he pulls out his sword.

Suddenly, the rogue’s sword is wreathed in flame. It seems to be a magic sword imbued with fire magic. Weapons like this are a specific type of magic tool.

The surrounding area turns noisy from the crowd’s reaction to the sword, but as for Allen…

“Well.. are you injured?” Charlotte

“Not at all. For such a small thing, I’m not that delicate.” Allen

“That was amazing. Allen is so strong. You surprised me.” Charlotte

“Oh, is that so?” Allen

Charlotte smiles while Allen cherishes her gesture. Then she turns her gaze to the trash rolling on the ground and frowns.

“But… what should we do with him? If he’s left alone, he could get a cold.” Charlotte

Because the giant Rock Man suddenly fell into the a dogeza, the area turns noisy. One of the minions shouts at Magus, who is presently imitating a small mountain.

“Hey! What… boss?” Minion A

“That’s right! He’s just a weak guy, for the boss, you’d just need one shot!” Minion B

“Shut up you guys! Don’t make this any worse!” Magus

Preparations for my vegetable garden are taking up a lot of my energy, chapters will be sporadic for a while.

Two hours later

As the sun sets, magical streetlights light up across the city. Even at this point, the shops facing the main street are still doing a brisk business.

“I’m back!” Erika

“Oh, you’ve made it back safe?” Allen

I’m back! Turns out building and setting up 200+ square feet of raised gardens is pretty tiring. Work also got busy for a few weeks as well, so I was working outside or tired all weekend and tired on weekday evenings too.

And I’m back to life on Easter Sunday… odd coincidence.

Allen sips his tea, then clears his throat.

“Well… is time to go home?” Allen

“Yes, that’s right.” Charlotte responds with an awkward nod.

The morning arrives, so Charlotte jumps up when she hears faint birdcalls.

“Ah…” Charlotte

She gets up from her sleeping spot and looks around. She’s in a small room. There are wooden boxes piled around the space and everything is covered in dust. There’s only one window and it’s located near the ceiling and covered in iron bars. She can only catch a small glimpse of the blue sky through it. The thin blanket she was under was full of holes, and her nightwear is close to rags.

She’s in the main residence of Duke Evans, in a remote storeroom. That was the entirety of the world of Charlotte.

After Charlotte finishes eating, she must begin to clean the house.

“It’s time to clean again, young lady.” Maid

“Yes” Charlotte

A maid with a darkened face hands Charlotte a bucket and rag. Charlotte takes them and starts to wipe the railing and windows near the stairs. This is her morning routine.

Eventually, the night arrived. In a silence that isn’t even pierced by insects, Charlotte sobs to herself.

“Hi, u, u … u …” Charlotte

In the pitch-black room, Charlotte cries softly. This isn’t a normal bedroom, it’s a food storage room in the basement of the Evans residence. Because of its intended purpose, there’s no windows and the air is cold. The darkness of the room is so complete that Charlotte couldn’t see a hand in front of her face.

When Charlotte wakes up, she’s lying on a brand-new bed.

“Ah…” Charlotte

Charlotte takes her time waking up, as she rubs her eyelids she glances around her room. There’s a closet next to the bed, along with a writing desk and chair, and a bookshelf with plenty of space. It’s a simple and cozy space.

This is not the Evans family residence, but Charlotte’s room in Allen’s mansion.

When she looks out her window, there’s no sign of the morning sun, it’s still dark. She can’t hear any animals moving around, the outside is quiet.

“Hey, you can come out now.” Allen

“Yes” Charlotte

Charlotte steps out the back door of the mansion in response to Allen’s call. This area is a large garden, there’s fields and beds where Allen grows herbs. A corner of it is lit up right now.

“Wow!” Charlotte

Allen had moved the living room sofa outside and lined up a bunch of lanterns around. Next to it was a fire with a pot on top of it. It’s like an elegant campsite.

A Morning in Early Summer

Myaha is walking up to Allen’s mansion under a perfectly normal cloudy sky.

“Oh, thank you… Nyaa?” Myaha

Myaha is delivering the normal newspaper and a parcel, but her eyes land on something that stuns her. She never expected Allen to be sitting at the front door holding his head in his hands.

It seems that Charlotte has been working on cooking the last few days, but the efforts have only come to burnt eggs and thing soup. Her skill is at the same level as Allen.

“I don’t think I’m doing enough for the money. Really, I feel like I should be paying rent…” Charlotte apologizes.

I’m trying a reduced schedule to see if I can keep to that schedule. I may end up adding in some bonus chapters at some point in the future. I’ve already harvested strawberries and radishes from my garden. Erika and Myaha look at each other, then sigh. “Nyaa, it’s so silly.” Myaha “That was worthless!” Erika “What are you two saying? I’m seriously worried!” Allen Allen stands up in response to Myaha’s unworried tone.

One Hour Later Charlotte has gotten ready and is standing by the front door. Her hair has been disguised to a black color and she’s carrying a small basket. She’s wearing the hair accessory Allen had picked out for her earlier. However, her face is very nervous. She looks into the mirror and carefully checks her appearance. “Well, I’m ready… Is it safe for me to go out?” Charlotte “Of course it’s fine.
